Sensory Integration tools are super fun!!!!!

(This post did crazy things! Sorry!)

So....one of the best things that came from those sweet friends giving me money to spend on Bo for sensory integration tools, was the fact that it got me really reading up on the products that are available. And through reading about the products and their uses and the customer reviews I learned a lot about the disorder and also saw how much of it fit Bo. And I was really grateful for a chance to explore a lot of these tools that I never knew about, that really might help him. And a lot of these items are fairly simple. But if they could help him at school? Can you say WOW a quadrillion times???????

I really scoured amazon. It was fun and I looked at every single product. Including a jelly fish lamp but I just couldn't justify it. :)  I think I got the very best items for Bo. And I think I got a lot for the money that was gifted to me. I am so appreciative. So So So a quadrillion times also.

These are small items Bo can carry in his pocket or keep tucked in a desk to get a sensory hit when needed. At church we let him color a ton while he listens to lessons. And he does seem to listen. Maybe playing with this thing would give him something to do to help him listen and sit still.

I know it is nuts!  A chew toy for boys! But he is always chewing his pencils and shirts and....whatever. it is a sensory thing. So here is a chew toy (lol) that he can chew on when he needs to.

I am really hopeful about this. The reviews were great. For some reason sitting on one of these is suppose to help him stay in his chair better. Currently Bo's teacher has let him work laying on the floor. If he could stay in his seat? That's be cool.

I felt like this was a little splurgy (50ish dollars). And I hope Corey will play along with this and install it for me. But Bo's therapist said how great he responded to a hammock. And I just wanted him to have it. A place he could go and "get centered" I guess? Nick said Bo would always be much more calm after a swing in the hammock. My poor sweet boy. It hurts my heart. I adore him. I hope his struggles serve him well later in life.

Super excited about this book. I was sold on it after I read this line.... "I feel like running really fast, run run run! Maybe I just need a s-q-u-e-e-z-e between the couch cushions like a hot dog.  Whew!  I feel better.

What an interesting thing that these people are going through that it can be identified in a sentence like that. That enough people feel the need to be squished like a hot dog for relief....amazing.

Pencil toppers! Since he chews all his pencils. This will give him oral stimulation when he needs it.

I loved this idea. It just sits on his desk and when he is struggling to listen or sit still he can just rub it.

So what do you think? Didn't I do good? Once again to these sweet ladies THANKS! Someday soon I am going to pay it forward.

I have a few more things to post on this subject. One which involves our stupid cat!!! But I will have to do it tommorow. I promised myself sleep tonight so I don't go and get wackadoo depressed.

Stephanie said...Check out weighted blankets as well. I've been wanting to get them for my kids (and me too!). They are suppose to be terrific for children with sensory sensitivity.

Jill said...There's actually a lady in Idaho Falls who makes weighted blankets. I was going to just make one for Mason but after talking to her, it's more complicated than I thought. You have to get the weight distributed just right. You got some great things. Sensory is so different with each kid. They had Mason a disco sit (a round disk that spins on his chair to keep wiggles at bay) at school. It made it worse. LOL. He has. Fidget toy in his pocket at all times and is allowed to pull it out at lull times (waiting in line etc). Helps calm him during the craziness. Good luck with Bo. I need to find some kind of hammock or body sock for Mason for after school. I think he would love it. I had forgotten til I read your post.

Tiffany said...Cool stuff!!! So glad you got the hammock.

Kent said...How many years did we get by without highly designed weighted blankets? My mothers patch quilts were fine. I still have two in my traveling sleeping equipment. One is so heavy I usually fold it as a mattress. It is made out of levi material.

Susan said...I actually wanted a weighted blanket but figured I could make one....they have a you tube video on it that tells you how to do it "right" I assume..

Susan said...Dad the weighted blanket is meant for people with sensory issues. The "average" person does just fine with quilts...

Nancy said...What a gift Tiffany and the others have given you. They know how important it is for Bo to have the proper tools to help him! He will succeed with a mom like you!

Kent said...I get what is being said, but I wonder why we didn't have all that a few years ago. Was it there and ignored? Was it another type of normal? Was .....

Susan said...It is a mystery.

Jeri said...My son Alex loves heavy blankets- so does Emily and both of them are sensory sensitive like their moma. I always loved the weight of Grandma Chamberlain's quilts but the itchy wool made them very uncomfortable for me too- same with my kids.

Jeri said...p.s. I love your blog!

Susan said...Thanks so much for your support and kind words Jerilyn!
